Can probiotics improve your mood during pregnancy and after delivery? Be a part of PROMOTE!

As a mom of 2 kids – one of them born with an extremely low birth weight and termed as a Miracle Baby – I have gone through a considerable amount of stress and anxiety during pre- and post-natal period. Many of you might have also faced frequent mood swings, increased levels of stress during pregnancy and post-delivery. Personally, I believe that this heightened anxiety and stress affected not only my overall health but also breastfeeding to a great extent.

Did you know that your maternal mood during pregnancy and after childbirth may affect breastfeeding, your ability to cope with motherhood and your child’s development?

Tell-Tale Signs of Not Feeling Fine during Pregnancy

It’s quite natural to feel a bit nervous, anxious and lost during and after pregnancy since it’s a life-changing event for a mom-to-be. But mild anxiety and not being in the best of moods in pregnancy and after delivery may weaken mom’s ability to cope with motherhood, and affect the breastfeeding experience. In the long term, all this may have an impact on your child’s behavior and development.

Watch for these signs:

  • You worry about everything.
  • You feel that something bad will happen.
  • You no longer find joy in doing most things.
  • You feel disconnected from your friends, family and work.

What to do if you are feeling stressed and anxious?

If you feel stressed and anxious, one of the things you can do is try to improve your mood, even before your baby is born.

Being in a good mood will help you cope better with breastfeeding and caring for your newborn.

PROMOTE

Recently I came across this interesting study called PROMOTE that aims to investigate the role of probiotics in pregnancy and how they may help put moms-to-be in a better mood.

What is PROMOTE?

PROMOTE is a research study that aims to find out if a probiotic (commonly taken to improve digestive health), may help to improve your mood during pregnancy or after delivery.

This study, which will investigate the role of probiotics during pregnancy and after delivery is carried out by the Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences’ (SICS) together with Société des Produits Nestlé S.A.

The Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences’ (SICS) mission is to promote health and human capacity in Singapore, Asia and globally. It’s the first institute within the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) to focus on clinical sciences and translational research.

Can probiotics improve your mood during pregnancy and after delivery?

Targeted at women who are 20 and 28 weeks pregnant, the PROMOTE study aims to find out if probiotics can improve one’s overall mood and cope better with motherhood.

The study will begin during the 3rd trimester of your pregnancy and will end 3 months after you have delivered your baby.

As part of the study, you will be asked to consume one stick of probiotic powder or a placebo (taken as a drink) every evening with a meal.

Do you know what the best part is?

It’s that all of these study visits are done at the comfort of your home, online via video conferencing (i.e. ZOOM) and you’ll be reimbursed for your time and contribution!

Who can join the Promote study?
