First-class soloist Haiou Zhang is well-known for his total mastery of intrinsic performance. He communicates with piano music and wonderfully showcases a combination of three elements of authenticity, emotions and elegance. Enough to leave the audience spellbound!
Zhang’s engaging yet somewhat serious, playing draws the audience into the dream-like narrative tinged with melancholy.
This recital gave much needed joy, relief and optimism for music lovers in a post-pandemic era.
His flying fingers over the piano keys left the audience members awestruck. It was a rare occasion to find audience of all ages – young and old and from all walks of life were listening Zhang – a virtuoso pianist with stillness and silence, with complete focus.
From Beethoven came the special drama and brilliance of the Waldstein Sonata, and transcendent spirituality in the fragile and sublime colours of his final sonatas. They contrast profoundly with the quiet reverence and sense of renewal in two transcriptions of Bach’s most beautiful melodies with sheer elegance.
Haiou Zhang inaugurated the new grand piano, C. Bechstein D282 concert grand, the king of all C. Bechstein grand pianos. “I always need an extremely wide range – colorings, emotions and possibilities and the D282 goes over my expectations” says Haiou Zhang, noting the difficulty to find the one instrument that “has a little bit more to tell on stage”.
Pianist Haiou Zhang who is a 38-year-old pianist has performed tens of thousands of recitals internationally – Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Netherland, Austria, Estonia, Russia, America, Canada, China and many more.
The crowd thoroughly enjoyed the performance with two amazing encores and was met with astounding applause. We are waiting for the next round of this concert already!
