Moving Home 2: Packing woes and an opportunity to #ReduceReuseRecycle

In this second part of our Moving Home adventure, lemme share with you about Packing woes and how we treated it as an opportunity to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. If you have missed Part 1, read it here.

To be honest, the most dreadful part of moving home is Packing! I literally got sleepless nights thinking about all the stuff that I had stuffed all these years in the old home. Is it possible that you yourself don’t know what all things you have in your home?! Yes, quite possible.

Hectic and backbreaking packing was all we were doing for quite a few days! First of all, am wondering how we managed to gather such gigantic ELEPHANT of items in the home in the first place. After initial confusion, we decided that this tiresome activity can actually pave way for a cleaner, tidier New Home. #ReduceReuseRecycle

It’s a natural human tendency to hoard and often we keep accumulating things that we think we will use but the time never comes when we actually use it. My husband was quite firm that we must let go of such items.

Certain tasks you have to do and even if you procrastinate as much as you can, you HAVE to get them done. Same happened with me and finally, I had to begin the gigantic packing project.

…and now I have lost count of how many boxes of clothes, books and toys we have donated in the last few days. Glad that we had maintained things in good condition and glad that they will be of some use for the underprivileged. Check out Salvation Army website here. We drove to their HQ many times to place our donations.

Channelizing my inner Marie Kondo

I think I with the help of my family did a fair job of packing ONLY what’s essential for new home and did declutter a lot.

Here are some pointers for those who are sailing in the same boat like us – either moving to a new home or just cleaning up current home:

⭕ Start as early as you can. Packing takes seriously a long time and the moment you know the rough date of moving into a new home, start sorting things that you need to move and that you want to give away.

⭕ Treat this period as a great opportunity to channelize your inner #MarieKondo and get rid of the myriad of the things that you have bought but hardly used. Also, expect a few goof ups, tantrums and mood swings. I remember going blank, getting confused and going haywire a few times. Accept it as a part and parcel.

⭕ Start with the MAIN culprit category of clutter of the home and clean it up. Example: in my case, kids room was like venturing into the unknown and I finished the task of making it clutter-free first.

⭕ Involve kids! They must be a part of the whole moving out and moving in rigmarole. Give them tasks like sorting their toys, keeping aside things that they are not going to use etc.

⭕ Get the boxes. Unless and until the boxes arrive, there’s no real speed to packing.

⭕ Find some friendly mover who gives boxes and not only moves but offers packing, dismantling and disposing off services. Also, find the mover who is affordable and doesn’t unnecessary cost a bomb. If you need one, PM me. This Raymond guy is really good and I will be happy to pass you his contact.

  2. Amazing and beautiful post. Loads of simple packing and moving tips to help make moving home easier, quicker and less frustrating. Moving is an exciting time, but packing up your house can be a daunting task. Great thoughts.

  3. Hehehe! Love that face of defeat against packing ?? Seriously that’s the biggest challenge and the even that nagging feeling about leaving a secure place also puts you in a different mood. Isn’t it?

  4. Agree both packing followed by unpacking and setting whole thing up drained us completely. These tips definitely eases the process

  5. Perfect tips if you’re planning to shift your house. It’s true that we accumulate lots of things in years. We too decluttered lots of things when we shifted our house last year.

  6. Looking at all the caron boxes, memories of our own moving home and packing came alive. Packing and then unpacking is such a painful but unavoidable task. These are some nice tips to lessen the tediousness.

  7. Packers and movers are blessing otherwise life would have been messed up while shifting houses your idea of taking boxes is very good I like to add you can name the labels of the boxes for easy unpacking
