Bye bye Blogger, Welcome to WordPress…

When I started “serious” blogging in late 2014,    My chosen platform was blogger.

It is easy, convenient to use for new bloggers. Interface is straightforward and my blog was quite happy to be on blogger. I originally titled it as – singaporedesi.blogspot.sg

The purpose of the blog was limited but clear for me – use blog as a complementary tool to showcase my Facebook Groups and Page activities and give outlet to my thoughts in general. Am an Indian based in Singapore so the name was SingaporeDesi.

To my utter surprise, the blog started growing vertically and horizontally very fast and I started to realize the tremendous appeal of this medium. There was no option but to be more expansive, be more inclusive – so came in picture the idea of – RainbowDiaries

So I blocked the domain first and designed one quick website with the provider’s website builder tool – www.RainbowDiaries.com though I continued to use the blogger platform on the subdomain.

Moving to WordPress:

After a few weeks, decided to move to WordPress to unleash more power for my baby blog. The main reasons for considering the move to WordPress were –

  1. Blogger was somewhat limited as far as the tools are concerned since it operates under Google platform. I found not too many templates, customization options on blogger. There is a limited scope to design in a free-flow manner.
  2. WordPress is an open-source system so you can extend your blog in many ways by using plugins, custom CSS and all. Coming from IT background, I find it very interesting and liberating.
  3. WordPress makes my blog look cooler and professional. So far, the difference between my earlier-blogger-blog and my now-Wordpress self hosted site is pretty striking.
  4. I can find loads of help resources for WordPress blogs.
  5. Having said this, I also need to note that it is possible to goof up with the settings and code in WordPress. I almost crashed my site some time back by choosing some weird plugin.

Why the name “RainbowDiaries”?

  • Life represents various colors. It means happiness, gloomy days, triumphs and losses, challenges, relationships, work, prayers and constant change. To capture these gamut of colors, RainbowDiaries  is simply the logical name.
  • This blog is a like a diary or journal of my experiences – as a Parenting blogger and as a Lifestyle blogger and as a Food blogger. It will also include freelance articles of mine and the events that my Facebook groups organize / support. To be true to the rainbow outlook of this blog, there will be product reviews covering the activities / events / products that I personally visit / try-out and love to share with the readers.
  • Last but not the least, my Daughter picked up this name out of several other names I had suggested 🙂

RainbowDiaries logo and banner:

To represent the colors of Life, I found this logo perfect! Simple yet effective.

cropped-one.pngI have used a few variations of it throughout the site.

The banner above again showcases the contents that you will find on RainbowDiaries – Singapore Parenting, Lifestyle and Food blog. I have thrown a few cute little icons of love, parenting, food, ideas and so on.

So far not done too much on my WordPress site. Just learning the interface and keeping things simple!

Thanks Blogger for all the love you gave to RainbowDiaries for all this period. Now it is time to move on to bigger and better things…hopefully WordPress will empower my blog to do that.

RainbowDiaries will have a new look and feel but the same soul! Promise…

Keep seeing you here!!

  1. I’m still at blogger and although I realise it’s limitations, the no-frills and ease of using it is still enough for me 🙂 congrats on the move and look forward to seeing the new look!

  2. I moved to wordpress slightly more than a year ago after 10 years on Blogger! No regrets tho blogger never gave me any trouble 🙂 I like that wordpress gives me more autonomy and options.

  3. You made the jump! I’ve been toying with the idea to move to WordPress too, just so I can self host it. But yeah, am currently still on Blogger because it’s just so easy to use! Oh, you can find great templates for blogger these days. Look for ‘WordPress templates for Blogger’ on Google.

  4. I’m on blogger and will continue to stay here because it’s too much work for me to move over. Haha. Congrats on the move.

  5. There seems to be lots of people moving to wordpress. I have been toying with the idea for a while too but it just seems too much work. haha, did it take long for you?

  6. I’m still liking blogger. I had a WordPress account but I didn’t like it because the templates do not show properly. Back to blogger!

  7. I remember considering both but the two platforms always work in very different ways. Depends on what you are going for though 🙂

  8. I heard a lot of people mention wordpress is easy to manage compare to blogspot . I still thinking whether to change to wordpress or not.

  9. I believe that there are many pros and cons for everything we choose. Still will support you in your decision! The logo and banner that you made is perfect for the blog looks really vibrant and young color =D

  10. was wondering which is a better platform to use for blogging, i do admit that both of them has their pros and cons.

  11. Congrats on your domain and safe transfer to wordpress. I am currently still on Blogger and I agree it seemed to be the popular platform for new bloggers. I agree WordPress is definitely allows more customization but I’ve got to get familiar with the codes first.

  12. I think to start with blogspot is an easier platform to write and edit. As wordpress is a bit on technical side, so while writing sometime you dont want to go for everything.

  13. I am still undecided. I’m in my comfort zone with blogger but I know it’s bound to change sooner or later. But I love the new name, logo and banner. Simple and creative but straight-to-the-point… I wish I could do what u do… Maybe not now but after I settle down with my no. 2 otw and all this year. Too much to handle lolx

  14. I have my technical team handling the blog for me. (very lucky indeed) However, I do find WordPress is very easy to use for a non-techie like me. And if I want to learn something about the features, there are tons of resources out there. Lastly, I like their web design!

  15. zz Wondering why did you mmove to wordpress, no fun ke at blogspot heeeee its a wondering Q? sorry, just wondered is blogspot no fun at all ? is it because you changed to wordpress.. for me wordpress is quite hard for me…

I’ve tried the wordpress before because my friend suggested to me the wordpress, he said its easy to change domain, but seriously I don’t even understand the wordpress features.. wordpress not for me I guessed 😉

  16. I did thought about moving from Blogger to WordPress but in the end, I didn’t because it’s not a seamless migration effort. Sigh.

  17. Not sure if you are aware, Blogger can also host your own domain. As for the limitations, I am not too sure about that. Some would find simple features good enough.
